'Marquée par l’animisme, la culture japonaise voit dans la moindre fissure ou grotte humide ou fleur l’image d’une vulve copulant avec le vent, les racines ou les algues dans un coït chaotique. La forme insolite d’une pierre, le bruit étrange d’un animal suffisent à suggérer les plus fantastiques des copulations. Dans les Kwaidan – légendes traditionnelles japonaises – l’homme est la proie d’hallucinations sexuellement incorrectes : il se fait abuser par des hordes carnavalesques de monstres qui n’aspirent tous qu’à le séduire. Tantôt menaçante, tantôt folâtre, la nature protéiforme grouille de présences qu’il faut charmer, conjurer, invoquer ou envoûter dans un jeu d’équilibre permanent. De cette fantasmagorie jubilatoire et prolifique, les artistes contemporains tirent des oeuvres débordantes de fantaisie.
