Le ney (persan ou turc), nay, naï ou nai (arabe) est une flûte oblique à embouchure terminale en roseau, originaire d'Asie centrale, dont les plus anciennes formes datent de l'âge des pyramides (représentation sur des peintures tombales égyptiennes vers 3000-2500 av. J.-C.).
Tous ces noms homophones proviennent d'un unique mot persan signifiant « roseau ».
Le style turc est lisse et coulant, le style iranien favorise les staccatos et les changements d'octaves alors que le style arabe est souvent plus rythmique, selon la tradition des bergers.
